What to do in Kalkan
Kalkan is the ultimate designer fishing village with a maze of winding cobbled streets that rise steeply above the harbour.
These streets are filled with lots of atmospheric bars, restaurants with roof terraces and scenic views, upmarket shops and boutiques selling silver jewellery, ceramics, antiques, carpets and crafts and beautiful cotton clothes for all ages.
Fish restaurants line the harbour and up the hill you can find traditional turkish establishments where you can dine seated on cushions or on roof top terraces serving a range of local foods and international cuisine.
Our favourite restaurants are Ozalps, The Olive Garden and Gironda's but there are many to chose from.
We are vegetarian and have a fantastic choice at virtually every restaurant. Allergies can also be catered for.
In terms of bars, the Moonlight Bar is one of the most popular and central places.
For something a bit livelier, try Sandals or The Yacht Point by the harbour.
Kalkan itself has a small beach but at the harbour there are free boats to the beach clubs that surround the area, which are only a short ride away. These offer excellent swimming in the sea via ladders and diving if you like diving see www.kalkandiving.com
You can also go by Dolmus to the nearby beaches, try Kaputas, Kalamar or Patara beach.
There are many interesting places to visit around the area from the ruined Lycian Cities of Patara and Xanthus to the Greek Temples of Letoon.
The dramatic canyon at Saklikent, the largest sea caves in Turkey, the sunken remains of a Lycian City at Kekova and a turkish village at Bezirgan are all within easy reach.
The next major town is Fethiye although Kas, which is only a short ride away by car, taxi or dolmus, is also worth a visit.
Kalkan has many facilities in the town, such as cash dispensers at Deniz Bank and Koc Bank and there are doctors, chemists, post offices etc.
The market is held every Thursday and is only a short walk away from the apartment.
Nearby Kas also has a market every Friday.
